From 1 November 2026 the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding moves to its low-season schedule. Morning tickets enter from 08:00, half an hour later than in high season; afternoon tickets enter from 12:00, and the park closes at 17:30, half an hour earlier than in high season.
Half an hour is not a detail. Most guides online still carry the old 07:30 opening time, and anyone following them will spend thirty minutes standing at the gate.
1. Three times that changed on 1 November
| Item | High season | November low season |
|---|
| Morning ticket entry | 07:30 | 08:00 |
| Afternoon ticket entry | 12:00 | 12:00 |
| Park closes | 18:00 | 17:30 |
Check the official WeChat account on the day you travel. The low-season window generally runs to the end of February, with separate arrangements over the New Year period.
2. What is easier in low season: tickets, not panda habits
Three things change: opening is half an hour later, closing is half an hour earlier, and tickets no longer sell out. In high season morning tickets often disappear days ahead; in November they are usually available at any time, including the day before.
One thing has not changed, and it is widely misunderstood: pandas do not stay outdoors all day in November. Cold weather does make them willing to go outside, but their rhythm remains crepuscular — bamboo and playtime from about 08:00 to 10:30, then a gradual move indoors after 11:30. To see pandas active, still go early.
3. A route for families: enter at the South Gate, two and a half hours
The park covers more than 3,000 mu. With a child, do not try to see all of it. Two and a half hours across the core area, with the child still energetic at the end, counts as a successful visit.
Take the shuttle first. After entering at the South Gate, ride the internal shuttle (CNY 30 per person, free for children under 1.3 m, standing only) straight to the Sub-adult Panda Villa. Save the walking for the animals.
Sub-adult Villa, then the Sun and Moon delivery rooms. These three stops are where children get loudest; the cubs are in the delivery rooms. Activity peaks around 09:00, so do not leave these stops until after 11:00.
Finish at the Giant Panda Museum. It is indoors and has a hands-on specimen area for children — a good place to rest tired legs.
Strollers are allowed, but the park is hilly. With an infant, bring both a carrier and a stroller: carrier in queues, stroller on flat ground.
4. Tickets: CNY 55, CNY 27, and who skips booking
Full price is CNY 55; half price is CNY 27 for ages 6 to 18 and for full-time students up to undergraduate level.
Booking is online and real-name only. There is no ticket window on site. Tickets can be booked up to 14 days ahead.
Visitors over 60, children under 6, and children under 1.3 m do not need a booking — entry is verified with ID at the gate.
Only the official WeChat account, Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, and a few authorised platforms are valid. Ignore anyone soliciting at the gate.
5. Getting there from Kuanzhai Alley: three options
The hotel is at No. 18 Yongling Road. The simplest option is a taxi, about twenty minutes to the South Gate — leaving by 08:00 works well. With a child, that fare is worth paying.
Metro works too: Line 5 from Fuqin, change to Line 3, alight at Panda Avenue station Exit A, then take the shuttle bus (about CNY 2) to the South Gate. Counting the change and the wait, it takes roughly twenty minutes longer than a taxi.
A third option is less publicised: a direct coach from Kuanzhai Alley to the panda base, CNY 12 one way, departing at 07:40. If you are staying nearby it is a relaxed choice, provided you make the departure time.
6. Four things that go wrong
Do not go on a Monday. The Giant Panda Museum closes on Mondays, and the No. 6 Villa area, home to Huahua, also closes every Monday.
Reschedule in heavy rain. Pandas stay inside in a downpour, so you view them through glass — a disappointment for children.
Do not eat a main meal inside. It is expensive and ordinary. Bring bread and fruit; hot water refills are available in the park.
The bamboo groves have mosquitoes. Even in November. Bring repellent.
7. After the pandas: back to the city
Leave by the South Gate around midday and head for Kuixinglou Street for lunch — skewers, maocai, egg-baked cakes, about CNY 50 per person for a serious meal. Then back to the room for a nap, and out again in the afternoon: Kuanzhai Alley is about a ten-minute walk, which is exactly the right distance after eating.
8. The numbers, for your own check
Hotel address: No. 18 Yongling Road, Xi'an Road Subdistrict, Jinniu District, Chengdu. About 100 rooms across eight room types. Check-in 14:00, check-out 12:00, late check-out to 14:00 on request. Buffet breakfast 07:00–10:00, CNY 25 per person. Telephone 028-60786899. Ten minutes on foot to Kuanzhai Alley, a little over ten to Kuixinglou Street, 460 m to Exit C1 of Fuqin Station on Line 5.
9. Five common questions about visiting in November
What time does it open in November? From 1 November 2026 the low-season schedule applies: morning tickets from 08:00, afternoon tickets from 12:00, closing at 17:30.
Do I still need to book early? Low-season morning tickets are usually available at any time, including the day before; the maximum lead time is 14 days.
Which gate is better with a child? The South Gate. Take the shuttle straight to the Sub-adult Panda Villa; two and a half hours covers the core area.
How do I get there from Kuanzhai Alley? A taxi takes about twenty minutes to the South Gate; or Metro Line 5 to Line 3, alight at Panda Avenue Exit A and take the shuttle. A direct coach also leaves Kuanzhai Alley at 07:40, CNY 12 one way.
Can I visit on a Monday? Better not. The Giant Panda Museum and the No. 6 Villa area both close on Mondays.
Times and fares follow the official announcement on the day. Save this page and read it again the day before you go.
