Every November people rush to the Ginkgo Avenue at UESTC, come back with a half-green, half-yellow set of photos, and post the same caption: too early. Ginkgo does not turn gold across Chengdu at once — the hills go first, the city follows, and the gap between them is close to a month.

On 1 November 2026 the ginkgo inside the city has only just begun to turn. On the usual rhythm, urban sites do not reach full colour until mid to late November. This page sets out three time windows, the sites that match each one, and how to reach them from Kuanzhai Alley.

1. Three windows: where to go and when

WindowWhere to go
Early to mid NovemberCiyun Temple on Yunding Mountain, Jintang; Wuhou Green Expo Park (allow a full day)
Mid to late NovemberUESTC Shahe campus, Jinxiu Lane, People's Park, Baihuatan Park (city centre, low risk)
Late November to early DecemberTianfu Park, Muguang Forest in Xindu, Qinglong Lake (the follow-up window)

These are windows, not fixed dates. A one to two week swing is normal and depends on when the cold actually arrives. The trees, not the calendar, are the reference.

2. Early to mid November: head out of town

The thousand-year-old ginkgo at Ciyun Temple on Yunding Mountain is among the first in the Chengdu area to turn. Temperatures on the mountain run lower than in the city, so colour arrives earlier — usually in early November. Reaching the temple and walking the grounds takes most of a day.

The ginkgo grove at Wuhou Green Expo Park enters its window at the same time; published guides put it between late October and mid November. It sits inside Wuhou District, so half a day is enough on site, but travel time has to be added.

What both share: worth a dedicated trip, not worth squeezing into a spare half day.

3. Mid to late November: the city centre

UESTC Shahe campus, Jinxiu Lane, People's Park and Baihuatan Park generally turn gold in this window.

City sites have one practical advantage: if the colour is not there, you can move to a teahouse in another park instead of losing a whole day. For families this matters — a child's patience runs out before the leaves change.

The ginkgo avenue at UESTC Shahe campus is the best known of the group, but campus access rules change from year to year. Check the university's official WeChat account before setting out rather than following an old forum post.

Jinxiu Lane is a narrow lane lined densely on both sides — good photographs, tight space. Clean shots without people exist only on weekday mornings. After midday at a weekend the crowd outnumbers the leaves.

4. Late November to early December: the follow-up window

Tianfu Park (Metro Line 1, Tianfu Park station) and Muguang Forest in Xindu (mid to late November) turn later. If both earlier windows pass you by, this one remains.

The plane trees at Qinglong Lake start changing in early November and give a different colour altogether. Autumn does not have to mean ginkgo only.

5. Getting there from Kuanzhai Alley

The hotel is at No. 18 Yongling Road, about a ten-minute walk from Kuanzhai Alley and 460 m from Exit C1 of Fuqin Station on Metro Line 5.

For People's Park, take Line 2 to People's Park station. For Shengxian Lake, Line 1 to Shengxian Lake station, Exit B. For Tianfu Park, Line 1 to Tianfu Park station, Exit A. From Fuqin, all three involve one or two changes and 20 to 35 minutes each way.

Give the two out-of-town sites — Yunding Mountain and Muguang Forest — a day of their own. Travelling with a child, treat walking time as a hard limit: strollers handle a ginkgo grove badly, and once a child is tired they want carrying. Anything over two hours each way turns into a carry-the-child trip.

Quiet hours exist in one place only: weekday mornings. At weekends, UESTC and Jinxiu Lane are busier than the trees are beautiful after midday.

6. How to tell whether the leaves have turned today

First, ignore the dates in last year's guides. Last year 10 November may have been gold; this year it may still be green.

Second, search for photographs posted today and check the date stamp. A post with a live location, published the same day, beats any guide.

Third, look at the trees, not the signs. In any one grove the sunlit trees turn first. Find the lit side on arrival instead of shooting a panorama from the gate.

7. Walking a ginkgo grove with a child: three things in the bag

Wipes and a plastic bag. Fallen ginkgo fruit smells strong once trodden in, and the smell travels on shoe soles. Clean up before getting back to the hotel.

Spare socks. Children walk into leaf piles, and leaf piles hold water.

A picnic mat. Ginkgo groves have no seating. When legs give out, the ground is the only option; a mat buys ten minutes of lying down.

Two safety notes as well: do not let a child collect fallen fruit as marbles — the pulp irritates skin, so wash hands before going home. Fallen ginkgo fruit is mildly toxic; handling it is fine, eating it is not, and even prepared ginkgo nuts should be eaten in small amounts.

8. The numbers, for your own check

Hotel address: No. 18 Yongling Road, Xi'an Road Subdistrict, Jinniu District, Chengdu. About 100 rooms across eight room types. Check-in 14:00, check-out 12:00, late check-out to 14:00 on request. Buffet breakfast 07:00–10:00, CNY 25 per person. Telephone 028-60786899. Ten minutes on foot to Kuanzhai Alley, a little over ten to Kuixinglou Street, 460 m to Exit C1 of Fuqin Station on Line 5.

9. Five common questions about Chengdu ginkgo

When does ginkgo usually turn in Chengdu? Mid to late November inside the city, early November in the surrounding hills, and a follow-up window from late November into early December. A one to two week swing is normal.

Will I see yellow leaves on 1 November? Not in the city. On 1 November 2026 the trees had only started to turn; full gold comes after mid November.

Which site is closest to Kuanzhai Alley? People's Park, on Metro Line 2, with Baihuatan Park in the same area. Within a ten-minute walk of Kuanzhai Alley there is no dense ginkgo grove.

Can I get into UESTC? That depends on the current year's rules. Access policy changes annually; check the university's official account before going rather than trusting an old post.

Can ginkgo fruit be eaten? Fallen fruit by the roadside is mildly toxic — keep it out of a child's mouth, and eat prepared ginkgo nuts in moderation.

When the leaves turn depends on when you go, not on the date a guide printed. Save this page and come back to it in mid November.
