Chengdu people eat breakfast in one place: the wet market. If a city's market is full by seven in the morning, its breakfast is worth eating. Chengdu is that kind of city.
Finding the market
Walk south from the hotel through an older residential block and you reach the archway reading "Qingyang Community Comprehensive Market". The street is short, lined with shops that have been open for more than a decade, none of them aimed at tourists. Owners know their regulars; a bowl of noodles arrives before you finish ordering.
Wang Ji Lao Yao pork intestine noodles: add the mao jie zi
13 yuan for a small bowl, 15 for a large. The noodles are handmade and the broth is bone-based, with a peppery lift. Mao jie zi is knotted pork intestine at 4 yuan each, braised until soft and juicy. Locals add one before ordering anything else - try it once and the habit explains itself.
One tip: it is quiet before 8 am and queues form after 9. With children, go early.
Kang Er Ge skewers: opens at noon, clear broth available
Around 30 yuan per person, cold-pot skewers pulled from a chilli-oil bath. With kids, no need to worry: ask for a separate bowl of clear broth and cook the mild items in it.
Rong Shi Liang Xin dumplings: ask for the clear version
Chilli-oil dumplings are 12 yuan per liang, thin-skinned and generous. If you cannot take heat, say so and you will get clear broth instead. On a cold morning, one bowl warms you right through.
Two extras
Tiantai Mountain cured pork is sold by weight and steams well back at the hotel. The fruit stall's Pujiang kiwis are at their sweetest in October - buy a bag and the kids have something to do all afternoon.

Why it is worth the detour
There is not a single influencer shop here - only locals eating. In Chengdu, the older the sign, the steadier the food. That rule holds across most snack streets in the city.
